my dad greets life and people with arms wide open.
come in and stay inviter
pull you in story teller
stranger’s stalled car pusher
i remember vividly a brief trip through singapore when i was young. early afternoon trip to a shopping center like large, shining jewel to be oohed and aahed over. we were wandering past a jewelry store when my dad saw a man who looked like he might be papua new guinean. he immediately called out and spoke to him in pidgin. the man stopped and turned towards us. childishly embarrassed at my dad’s friendliness, we trailed after him.
after a few words in pidgin, the man switched to english and said, “let me introduce myself…i’m _________, the prime minister of the solomon islands. i’m here….”
the part i remember most is that it made no difference to my dad. our eyes opened wide and his heart stayed just as open as at first.
he doesn’t need to know who, to embrace wholly. and my dad is still reaching out, drawing people close as they come across his path.
keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
